Custom Keyboard Shortcut for Flat.io and Soundtrap — Chrome Extension

Posted by tmp7 on May 19, 2023

Are you using Flat.io & Soundtrap to make music? If you do, I have a Chrome extension to make your workflow easier by introducing few keyboard shortcuts!

FYI : Flat.io is online service where you can write sheet music, and Soundtrap is another online service for creating music.

Use with Soundtrap

Recording midi input with Soundtrap

When making music by recording midi input, we often make tons of mistakes and have to undo everything. If you actually list them, this process can be cumbersome :

  • Hit Space to pause recording.
  • Hit Ctrl+Z to undo recorded notes.
  • Hit Enter twice to move the timeline marker back to previous position.
  • Hit Ctrl+Space to start recording again.
Now, after a little tweak using this Chrome extension :
  • Hit Space to pause recording.
  • Hit backtick (`) to undo then go back to previous position.
  • ... or hit backslash (\) to undo, go back to previous position, and start recording.

Use with Flat.io

Semi transparent volume & midi input buttons when inactive

Flat.io doen't have keyboard shortcut to control volume and toggling midi input. Worry not, now you have :
  • Toggle mute volume
Hit backtick (`) twice (to open the menu and toggling the mute button).
  • Toggle midi input
Hit backslash (\) twice (to open the menu and toggling the mini input).
Also, these buttons will become semi-transparent when inactive.

Installation Instruction

  1. Download the extension from here: Online Music Helper Chrome Extension. If you're not familiar with GitHub, there's an option to download as .zip file. Download and extract it to your file system.
  2. Open chrome://extensions URL in Chrome, then toggle on Developer mode.
  3. Click Load unpacked and choose the extension folder you've downloaded.
  4. Try accessing either flat.io or soundtrap and check if it's working properly.
